The name of one of the "shovel sellers" is on the back of my pants - Mr. Levi Strauss. And he did not have to live in a tent in the middle of nowhere, his store was in San Francisco. Also, lifting up an empty shovel (to sell) is a lot less backbreaking than lifting up a shovel full of gravel (99% of the time, worth zilch). PS: 7 to 10 years ago, I ignored the "earnings don't matter, this time its different" tech stocks and kept my investments in dividend paying (very strong) utilities, Blue Chips etc. Now, when I bring yet another dividend check to the bank, and I see the NASDAQ is still less than 1/2 of what it was back then, I am glad I invested the slow and sure way.<br><b>References : </b><br> I do not know the names of any of the 49ers who dug for gold (except for Sutter the one who started it all and I don’t know how he did). Too many people got hurt and killed over gold and it was not worth it! I would have lived off my farm. I would have grown my own food. Slaughtered my own cattle,pigs and chickens. And I would have been just fine without gold in my life! My people know how to farm, we know nothing about gold or being rich!
