ok i would love for my daughter who is in the 10th grade to go to an online school where she can earn her high school diploma. Now my question is is this legal for my child to do her schooling online?i live in NYC and would love this for her to learn online

Yes, it is legal. In some states it would be considered a form of private schooling; others consider it homeschooling using an online school.

Find a homeschool support group for NYC to learn from other locals the way your local laws work. Or look them up online…

I am considering earining a degree online instead of in a traditional classroom because I have children and a job, so I don’t have much time for traditional classroom learning. My eventual goal is to be a teacher so that I can be on the same schedule as my children. I am considering getting a 4 year degree online, and then doing my teacher certification traditionally. Will employers hire a person with an online degree, or are they more skeptical and prefer a traditional degree?

They will, but I think now it’s just as important WHERE you got your degree from, as much as it is that you have one.

I have a regular job but would like to have a vocation so as to earn more cash hence my decision to learn how to decorate during weddings and other corporate events like seminars, luncheons, symposia etc

Take a class…art schools will be able to help you…interior design, at community college.

My goal is to become a clinical psychologist, something i would not want to earn online. However i was intrigued by one online program, although highly skeptical of its value. I found a CACREP and regionally accredited masters in mental heath counseling, that is done about 80% online. The only reason i don’t dismiss it outright is because of the CACREP accreditation. Is that a degree that one could realistically earn online or would it be too difficult to learn/find a job/ know how to do hands on stuff, with a degree like that?

Don’t know. Go ask a guidance counselor at a college that has a strong psyc./ social services program , in your area. That ought to take an hour and a half of your time and, maybe , ten dollars worth of gas. Accomplish your goal, no matter what it takes, Once you do, you’ll find plenty of work.
There is plenty of nut jobs out there.

I’m a recently divorced single mom, and I really want to become a nurse, at the very least an LVN/LPN. I do not have any strong support network and working while going to nursing school just won’t work right now. I am willing to move anywhere (in the U.S) if I could find an opportunity where I could work at a hospital and they offer training or some sort of program where you can work at the same time. I’ve heard of something like this but I forgot the correct name (sorry). If you know of any such opportunity please let me know. The community college nursing programs have a 1-2 year wait list just to START, and the private career colleges charge an arm and a leg. Or advice on medical careers that I could earn a degree online (and do clinicals ofcourse onsite).
Any info would be appreciated. I really want to work in the medical field!! THANKYOU

Some of the state supported programs in Florida offer this type of arrangement. They also offer tuition reimbursement programs. Florida has an aging population and medical careers are a premium here.

I went to college for 2 years and had to withdrawal for financial reasons. I am very successful at what I do, but I plan to finish my degree over the next six part time.

I see all these advertisements for online university. Most local colleges seem to be offering more classes every year online.

It causes me to wonder how far away we are from most degrees being earned online as a standard and not the exception?

It would probably help (in theory) to cut down the cost of higher education as it becomes more accepted.

You might think at first that people will not get as much from learning onlline as they do in the lecture or class setting. But most learning is done from text.. And.. I remember when I was younger in college I was a little distracting on the social scene of the campus and probably should have spent more time in my studies.

Would also be more environmentally friendly too.

Ten years ago, I heard a lot of concern about this at colleges. Now, I think most realize that the audience reached is a completely different one, and we are not really losing students to online learning to any significant extent. Colleges aren’t losing enrollment, but they are looking to online learning to expand their markets.

First of all, it is not true that most learning is done from the text. If that were the case, colleges would have gone away with the advent of affordable publishers of books, not just online universities. If you went to institutions at which this was the case, then you didn’t go to very good ones!

Secondly, as well as cutting costs, you are again ignoring quality. A few years ago, I went to an alumni association meeting at which the Dean spoke about why they had made the decision NOT to go into online learning. He said that they had done a study, and had calculated that to produce one course at a level which was equivalent to that they offered on campus would cost them $500,000, and they could use it exactly twice before the material would become obsolete. Obviously, the majority of schools now offering courses online are not at that level, but then neither are their brick-and-mortar courses at the level of that institution. Most of the brick-and-mortar institutions I’ve spoken with have admitted that their online courses aren’t as good as those held on campus, but they do it to meet demand so that they can increase enrollments.

Another issue is the fact that most traditional students aren’t self-motivated enough to follow through on online courses. The only thing that makes school bearable for many is that they can get together with their friends or meet new people in a way they are not doing online. I don’t foresee that going away.

In short, I think that while there will continue to be a growth (and hopefully an improvement) of online offerings, I don’t see an imminent danger for traditional colleges. Most students want to go full-time and get through quickly, rather than taking twice as long to finish (witness the struggle in part-time MBA programs these days; students are getting younger and more full-time than they ever were before). I think another factor is that there are so few good jobs available for those who haven’t graduated from college yet; high school graduates want more to do than just to sit in their parents’ living rooms doing online homework. I don’t see that changing, so there will certainly be a market for traditional colleges in the near future.

i would like to attend a four year college after i finish my senior year of high school but in the meantime i am interested in learning more about media and interior art. can i start earning a degree online from the art institute and then still go to a four year college next fall? i don’t mind doing both or dropping the srt institute after one year…

If you’re going to take classes in media and art, I’d much rather you take them somewhere reputable, and someplace that’s regionally accredited. The AI chain isn’t very well respected, and they are expensive, and their classes won’t transfer to your college, if you wanted them to.

You can check the art schools near you to see what art classes they offer online. But some that offer quite a few include Mass Art, Minneapolis College of Art, Savannah College of Art, and Academy of Art University. Those are all reputable and regionally accredited.

In fact, speak to your guidance counsellor about this. There are sometimes ways that you can have the online classes you take at a college apply toward your HS graduation.
